Gender Socialization in Latino/a Families: Outcomes from Two Retrospective Studies

Abstract

In this essay, we provide findings from 2 studies made to explore gender-related socialization in Latino/a families. In research 1, 22 adult Latinas (ages 20–45) finished interviews that are in-depth. In research 2, 166 Latino/a university students (58% females; M age 21.4 years) finished self-report studies. Learn 1 findings claim that numerous Latino/a parents socialize their daughters with techniques which can be marked by “traditional” gender-related expectations and communications. Outcomes of Research 2, including descriptive analyses therefore the creation of scales to explore household correlates of gender-related socialization, help and expand these findings. Male and female participants described various experiences of home tasks, socialization of gender-typed behavior, and freedom to pursue social tasks or get access to privileges.
